What is Voice Dialogue and How Will It Help My Career?
Do you find you are “of two minds” about what to do with your life or career? Do you have inspired ideas one day and then the next find yourself poking holes in them? Does your heart desire to make a career move but your mind thinks it’s a bad idea? Do you feel stuck or indecisive? These might be the signs of a career block.
What is a career block?
We have various parts of our personality (mind and heart) and when these parts are in conflict or not working together they can block us from moving forward. For example, many times when people go through change, they’re ready to move forward, but are holding back and afraid at the same time.
If you’ve noticed a block, fear or issue that’s surfacing and it seems that two parts of you are not working together, then the Voice Dialogue exercise can help.
Voice Dialogue:
The process of Voice Dialogue, was part of my original coaching certification. At that time, the instructor told us, “clients will thank you for this.” She was right! The Voice Dialogue is an exercise I have done with almost everyone I have worked with since launching my coaching practice in 2002 and they have all thanked me. Why? Because being of two minds about how to move forward in one’s career is exhausting and doing this exercise frees up that energy to be used in helping you move forward.
How it works:
- In Voice Dialogue, we dialogue with various parts/aspects/feelings to help you work through your block. You set a goal for what you’d like to accomplish by doing this process – examples: overcome the block, understand it, stop the conflict, move forward, etc. We’ll then clarify the block and identify two (or more) parts that aren’t working together.
- Then as the facilitator, I take you through a series of thought provoking questions to give each part a voice and work with the 2 parts to see what they need from each other to work together.
- I then summarize the whole session playing back the dialogue for each voice and what they need from and want to give each other. We finish with a visualization exercise using symbols to represent the parts to help integrate them.
Some clients experience an immediate feeling of resolution, while for others the exercise is like a time-release capsule and resolution happens over time. But all thank me for the Voice Dialogue as they no longer feel stuck in an endless, negative inner dialogue! Contact me to share what’s keeping you from taking action to reach your career goals. If you are feeling stuck, it might be a career block that is holding you back. Voice Dialogue can help!
